These species cannot be taken under any circumstances in California waters. Release immediately if caught. Also note: Cowcod and Canary Rockfish are prohibited rockfish with zero bag limit — avoid keeping any unidentified rockfish.
Giant Sea Bass

Completely protected in California since 1982. Can live 70+ years and grow over 500 lbs. If caught, must be released immediately with minimal handling.
