Fishing Near the Border / Mexican Waters

Trips to Tanner Bank, Cortez Bank, and Coronado Islands may enter Mexican waters. Once you cross into Mexican territorial waters (12 nautical miles from the Mexican coast), California regulations no longer apply.

  • A Mexican fishing license is required for all anglers in Mexican waters
  • Bag limits for species like yellowtail and tuna may differ from California limits
  • Some species protected in CA (e.g. white seabass) may have different status in Mexican waters
  • Your captain should carry vessel documentation and ensure all aboard have valid Mexican licenses
